Baked BBQ Chicken Thighs

July 11, 2026 by Mila

The aroma of sweet and smoky BBQ wafts through your kitchen, making your mouth water in anticipation. Baked BBQ Chicken Thighs are not only deeply flavorful, but they also come together quickly, making them a go-to weeknight dinner. The crispy skin and tender meat deliver a delightful texture that will keep everyone at the table asking for seconds.

This recipe is perfect for families, BBQ enthusiasts, or anyone looking for a satisfying meal without the grill. It’s ideal for busy weeknights but can also be made ahead and stored for future dinners.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • The chicken becomes tender and juicy while the skin gets perfectly crispy.
  • A simple marinade packs enormous flavor in just 30 minutes.
  • BBQ sauce caramelizes beautifully for an irresistible finish.
  • Leftovers are delicious and can be repurposed in various dishes.

What You’ll Need

Here’s everything you need to make delicious baked BBQ chicken thighs.

For the Chicken

  • 8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ tablespoon onion granules
  • ½ tablespoon garlic granules
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste (about 1 teaspoon each)

For the Sauce

  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite; I used Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce

Use your favorite BBQ sauce for best results.

Substitutions & Swaps

  • Chicken thighs can be replaced with drumsticks.
  • Olive oil can be swapped for avocado oil.
  • Hot sauce can be omitted for less heat.
  • BBQ sauce can be homemade for a fresher taste.

How to Make It

Follow these simple steps for a delicious result.

Preheat

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F (Gas 6).

Prep

Prep the chicken by removing any unwanted fat and trimming off any excess hanging skin.

Marinate

Transfer the chicken into a large Ziploc bag, add smoked paprika, onion granules, garlic granules, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Close the Ziploc bag and shake to evenly coat the chicken. Marinate for at least 30 minutes if time allows.

Arrange

Line a baking dish with parchment paper or place a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet. Arrange the chicken skin side up on the rack.

Bake

Place the tray in the oven and bake the chicken for about 25-30 minutes, or until it’s about 80% cooked through.

Mix Sauce

Meanwhile, mix together the BBQ sauce and hot sauce in a small bowl until fully combined, then set aside.

Glaze

Carefully remove the chicken from the oven and brush BBQ sauce on both sides. Return the chicken to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through, skin crispy, the sauce caramelized, and the internal temperature reaches 165F/74C. Flip the chicken halfway to enhance caramelization beneath.

Rest

Once done, remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving hot with your favorite sides. Enjoy! If you want the skin slightly charred, pop the chicken under a broiler for about 5 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.

How to Store It

Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: Yes, for up to 3 months.
Reheat: Microwave for 1-2 minutes or until heated through.

Tips for Best Results

  • Ensure the chicken is fully coated with the spice mixture for maximum flavor.
  • Basting with sauce halfway through baking develops a more caramelized finish.
  • Letting the chicken rest allows juices to redistribute for optimal tenderness.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with coleslaw for a refreshing crunch.
  • Pair with cornbread for a complete BBQ meal.
  • Enjoy alongside grilled veggies for a balanced plate.
